Speech Therapy Toolkit 5.Stethoscope

This is mine – a cheap (£4!!!) job from Amazon.  However it is absolutely fine and I can hear perfectly when carrying out cervical auscultation.

The best stethoscope I’ve used it definitely a Littman – the sound is much crisper.  I find the infant ones are best  – they are tiny and you can ‘snuggle’ them in right on the side of the larynx.

Cervical Auscultation is controversial assessment tool.  However, the studies I’ve seen are studying it’s ability to identify penetration/aspiration as a standalone method.  I find it a useful adjunct to my swallow assessments – I palpate and auscultate and observe behaviours, and use all three to make my judgements.
